Handmade Gifts for Boyfriend That Do Not Read as Too Girly

Quick answer: A handmade gift lands with a boyfriend when the colour is neutral and the object has somewhere to sit. Black and white, green and blue read as an object; pink reads as a message about him. Order it as a finished piece with a delivery date you can see, and check the shelf or desk it is going on before you pick the size.

We searched six gift phrases the way a buyer searches them, wrote down the first hundred or so results on each, and counted what came back: 693 saved images, 254 different websites behind them. Then the number that changes how you shop. Just over a quarter of the top results, 26.8%, had no working link on them at all. The picture is somebody’s photo. There is nothing behind it to order.

That is the real problem with searching for a gift for a boyfriend in the last two weeks before a date. Half of what looks perfect is not a thing you can get. The other half is a thing you can get, and the question becomes whether he will actually keep it out where people can see it, or move it to a drawer the week after.

Black and white reads as an object on a shelf rather than a statement about the person it was given to.

What “too girly” actually means when he opens the box

Nobody who says it means the object is feminine. What they mean is narrower and more useful: the gift announces the relationship to everyone who walks past it. A pink deer on a desk in a shared office is a small public statement, and he has to decide every morning whether he wants to make it. So it goes home. Then it goes on a shelf in the bedroom. Then it goes in the wardrobe.

Colour is doing most of that work. The same shape in black and white sits on the same desk and reads as a thing somebody chose, not a thing somebody was given. He does not have to explain it. That is the whole difference, and it is the reason the neutral colours are the ones we suggest for this occasion even though they are not what most people ask for first.

The second thing is scale. Anything much bigger than a coffee mug becomes furniture, and furniture needs a decision about where it lives. Our pieces are 23cm, which is roughly the height of a hardback book stood on end. It fits on a bookshelf between things that are already there. Nothing has to be moved to make room for it, and that matters more than it sounds.

The three colours that carry it

Out of everything we make, three colourways are the ones we suggest when the gift is going to a man: black and white, green and blue. They are the least loaded, and they sit against the widest range of rooms.

Black and white is the safest of the three and the one to pick when you have never seen his flat. It works against white walls, wood, grey, black shelving, anything. It is also the only one that looks deliberate in an office.

Green wants a room with something warm in it: wood, plants, a brown sofa. In a very cold grey room it reads as the only colour in the frame, which can be exactly right or can look stranded. Look at one photo of his room before choosing it.

Blue is the middle option. It is quieter than green, less stark than black and white, and it is the one that tends to work when his room already has blue in it somewhere, which is more often than you would expect.

Pink is our most-stocked colour and it is the wrong pick here

Worth saying plainly, because it goes against what we would sell more of. Pink is the colour we make most of, by a wide margin. It is the one people buy for friends, for sisters, for birthdays, for nurseries. It is also, in our experience, the one that gets moved off the desk.

There is one situation where it is right: when the joke is the point. If the two of you already have a running thing about him being soft, if he would put it on the dashboard of the van specifically because it is ridiculous, then pink is funnier and better than any neutral. That is a real case and it happens. But it only works when you already know the answer. If you are choosing pink and hoping, choose black and white instead.

Who this is not for

A crochet figure is not a universal gift and pretending otherwise wastes your money. Three cases where it is the wrong call:

  • He has nowhere to put it. Shared flat, no desk of his own, one shelf that already holds everything. An object that needs a surface is a burden in that situation, not a gift.
  • The relationship is three weeks old. A handmade figure carries more weight than its size suggests. Early on, the weight is the problem.
  • He is a minimalist and means it. Not the aesthetic, the actual habit of owning very little. He will be polite about it and it will still be gone by spring.

If any of those describe him, the honest answer is that something consumable suits him better and we would rather say so than take the order.

When handmade helps and when it does not

Handmade helps when the gift is meant to say you thought about it specifically. Every piece has small differences, the eyes sit a fraction apart, the ears are never identical twins, and that is visible when you hold it. Nobody else has that exact one.

It does not help when he cares about function above all else. A person who evaluates objects by what they do will register a crochet deer as decoration, correctly, and decoration is not a category he has strong feelings about. That is not a failure of the gift. It is a mismatch, and it is the same mismatch that makes the minimalist case above go wrong.

Getting it there in time

Each figure is worked by hand, so the piece you order is either one that already exists or one that has to be made. Those are very different timelines and it is the single thing most worth checking before you fall in love with a colour. What is listed in the shop is what exists now and ships now. If the date matters, and for a birthday or an anniversary it always does, take what is in stock over what is perfect.

The other small thing: say who it is for when you order. A gift going straight to him and a gift coming to you first are packed differently, and it costs nothing to mention.

Common questions

Is a crochet toy a strange gift for a man?

It is unusual, which is most of the point. The thing that makes it land or not is colour and placement, not the object itself. Neutral colour, somewhere obvious to sit, and it reads as a piece of decor rather than a soft toy.

Which colour should I pick if I have never seen his room?

Black and white. It is the only one that does not depend on what is already there.

How big are they, really?

23cm standing, roughly a hardback book on its end. Small enough for a bookshelf, big enough to be noticed.

Can I ask for a colour that is not listed?

Sometimes, but it moves you from what exists to what has to be made, and that changes the delivery date. Ask before you count on it.

What if he does not like it?

Read the three cases above honestly before ordering. Most disappointment with a gift like this is predictable from the start, and it is nearly always one of those three.

Is one with a heart too much for a boyfriend?

The heart is small and it reads differently depending on the colour behind it. On pink it is a statement. On black and white it is a detail. If you want the heart without the statement, that is the combination to pick.

Every figure in the shop is finished and ready to send. Colours, sizes and what is in stock right now.
