About Emma Sunhat

What we like about Emma Sunhat is how little it tries to be everything — it does #adult, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Crochet Patterns shelf. No reviews either way, so the preview is doing all the work on this one. It comes from Little Goose Handmade. It sits at 39 saves — too few to call it popular, which is exactly why it is worth a look before everyone else finds it.

A pattern that counts stitches at the end of each row saves you the evening you would otherwise spend frogging. If you want one use for it, take #baby: that is the direction the designer clearly had in mind, and it is the one we would follow. The licence tab and the full-size preview are the whole of our due diligence here, and they take about a minute between them.

It answers to #child, #crochet pattern, #hat and #sunhat, and that spread of wording is worth noting: a file tagged this consistently usually behaves the way the preview suggests. Judged against the requests we see — crochet coasters, crochet toys, crochet basket, bookmark crochet and crochet bookmarks free patterns — this is a middle-of-the-road answer, and middle of the road is usually what the job needs. We keep it under Crochet Patterns, which is where to look if you want the rest of the crochet patterns we have gone through.

How to use this pattern

  1. Download the PDF from Creative Fabrica and check the yardage and hook size before you shop — a small gift rarely needs a full skein.
  2. Work the gauge swatch anyway on anything that has to fit, like a hat or a bracelet; on a stuffed toy you can skip it.
  3. Stuff toys firmer than feels right and close the seam with a ladder stitch — a gift gets squeezed, and loose stuffing shows within a week.
  4. Make the first one a week before you need it. The second one is always the one you give away.
