About Small Teddy Bear

Most of what turns up under stuffed animal needs work before it is usable. Small Teddy Bear is the version that does not. Unreviewed so far — read that as untested rather than as a verdict. The designer behind it is kristitullus. Only 5 people have saved it so far, so this is our pick rather than the crowd's.

Our own plan for it is teddy bear, because that is where this kind of pattern does the least arguing with you. Yarn weight and hook size decide the finished size, so check them against your basket before casting on — the wrong weight shows the stuffing through the stitches. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every pattern on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.

Search for amigurumi and this is the file those words land on; they are all the same pattern, filed under whichever phrase you happened to type. The wording people arrive with is crochet stuffed animals, teddy bear nursery theme, vintage teddy bear nursery, doll handmade and handmade doll house, and we would rather shelve for those requests than for how a thumbnail looks in a grid. The same shelf also answers to toy, doll, plush and bunny, so widen the search there before giving up on it. On this site it lives on the Amigurumi and Toy Patterns shelf, so it also turns up for people browsing amigurumi and toy patterns rather than searching for it by name.

How to use this pattern

  1. Download the PDF from Creative Fabrica and check the yardage and hook size before you shop — a small gift rarely needs a full skein.
  2. Work the gauge swatch anyway on anything that has to fit, like a hat or a bracelet; on a stuffed toy you can skip it.
  3. Stuff toys firmer than feels right and close the seam with a ladder stitch — a gift gets squeezed, and loose stuffing shows within a week.
  4. Make the first one a week before you need it. The second one is always the one you give away.
