About Chubby Frog

What we like about Chubby Frog is how little it tries to be everything — it does amphibian, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Amigurumi and Toy Patterns shelf. No reviews either way, so the preview is doing all the work on this one. Credit goes to Jennifer McDow Kearney. The save count is still small at 47, so read this as our opinion and not a consensus.

Check the yarn weight and hook size against what is in your basket before you start — an amigurumi worked in the wrong weight comes out the wrong size and the stuffing shows through. Our own plan for it is animal, because that is where this kind of pattern does the least arguing with you. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every pattern on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.

The words on the listing are amigurumi, ball, chubby and chubby frog, and they are worth reading as a description rather than as tags. We track what people actually type before they land here: crochet stuffed animals, teddy bear nursery theme, vintage teddy bear nursery, doll handmade and handmade doll house. If that is roughly what you were after, this pattern is in the right family. Related wording on the shelf: toy, doll, plush, stuffed and bear. Same shelf, different phrasing, and the sort options above work across all of it. On this site it lives on the Amigurumi and Toy Patterns shelf, so it also turns up for people browsing amigurumi and toy patterns rather than searching for it by name.

How to use this pattern

  1. Download the PDF from Creative Fabrica and check the yardage and hook size before you shop — a small gift rarely needs a full skein.
  2. Work the gauge swatch anyway on anything that has to fit, like a hat or a bracelet; on a stuffed toy you can skip it.
  3. Stuff toys firmer than feels right and close the seam with a ladder stitch — a gift gets squeezed, and loose stuffing shows within a week.
  4. Make the first one a week before you need it. The second one is always the one you give away.
